The Grade 6’s had the opportunity to watch and listen to Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield answer student questions about his experiences aboard the, International Space Station (ISS). Chris Hadfield is from Ontario. He attended high school in Oakville and Milton and earned his glider pilot license. Later, he joined the Canadian Armed Forces and earned an engineering degree. While in the military he learned to fly various types of aircraft and eventually became a test pilot and flew several planes. He became the first Canadian astronaut to commander a spaceship. Chris Hadfield is now a university professor.

Twenty students from schools across Canada were selected to ask Chris a question. One of our own students’ was selected! Tito asked, “When you went to space, what did you eat and how did you eat?” Chris responded saying that he used a container that could keep food for up to three years and will not spoil, however when you want to eat all you have to do is add a little water and it will become edible. He also showed them examples of food he ate.
From this experience the Grade 6 classes learned a lot of information. The Grade 6 classes learned that you have to be fit to go into space because a heavy person won’t fit in a spaceship. Also, if you don’t eat healthy food your body will not be strong to deal with the changes in atmosphere. They also learned about sleep patterns, seeing pollution from space, and if you go into space you go through physical and mental exercises.
Chris Hadfield’s most important message was that anyone can accomplish their goal if they keep trying.
