We are pleased to announce that Glenburnie School has partnered with Free the ChildrenThis organization helps to save youth from poverty and exploitation, and nurtures the belief that young people are able to make a difference in the world.

Free the Children began in 1995, when Craig Kielburger read a disturbing newspaper headline about a boy who was murdered as he fought against child labour.  It was a life changing moment.  Moved by the article, Kielburger encouraged a group of his Grade Seven classmates to begin what is now recognized as the world’s largest network of children helping children.

Although the partnership with Free the Children is a new initiative to Glenburnie School, their message is in keeping with Glenburnie’s:

Empower our students of today, for they will be our leaders of tomorrow.

Glenburnie is proud to take on a long-term initiative to build a school in Kenya, one brick at a time. The cost of this endeavor is $8500. For every $100 raised, a brick is added to a special chart that is prominently displayed.  Our goal is to achieve 850 bricks.  To start us off, our student government organized a ‘Love Is’ button sale on Valentine’s Day, raising $800, and enabling us to add 8 bricks onto our chart.

Families are invited to contribute to this cause by offering donations, or by holding an echo-age birthday party and donating a portion of the money to Free the Children (www.echoage.ca).

To celebrate this partnership, Glenburnie hosted a Mini We Day on April 22nd, 2013. Mini We Day offered a small glimpse of the national events which take place all over Canada to inspire and engage youth.  At Glenburnie’s Mini We Day, there were presentations by many talented artists and speakers, including professional athletes, and our very own Glenburnie performers.
