On Thursday November 7th, Canadian Navy Lieutenant Commander Hugh Son visited the grade 10 and 11 history classes. During his visit, he described to us his job and what life is like for others around the world. He explained how he went through some intense training and how he lost so much weight over one mission. He explained the amount of time he is to spend with the force and how he is looking forward to a nice quiet job when he leaves the Navy.
Not all of the stories were about happy people and happy times. Some of the things he said were quite frightening. When he was on a mission with others he described how you had to put bottles at the edge to keep poisonous snakes from getting in.
Many of us were shocked by how many children around the world are forced to have a gun put in his or her hands and be expected to kill someone at a moments notice. It is quite scary to realize that there are so many other children out there who are forced to do terrible things in order to survive the army in other countries. But that is what this man, and his comrades, are there for. They are here to help protect Canada and to ensure that these atrocities do not befall anyone else. We would all like to give this man a huge thank you for his visit and for the work he does for us.
