Glenburnie School recently held an Economics Fair which was a huge success!  A variety of exciting and enriching activities were organized by our talented and creative teachers for students across the grade levels.

Our youngest students in Preschool to Senior Kindergarten learned about Economics as they participated in a variety of theme-related activities which included: the Kinder Grocery Store, Penny Bingo, and Coin Stamping.  The fun continued in the Primary Division where students enjoyed lessons which included: Producers to Consumers, Supermarket Sweep, Needs and Wants, Needs and Wants, Spend or Save, and Popcorn Economics.

Students in Grades 4 and 5 were engaged in a number of intriguing activities including Fresh from the World, Economics Newspaper Scavenger Hunt, Budget Blues, Les Desires et Les Besoins, and Why Do I Want All of this Stuff?   Our Grade 6-8 students thoroughly enjoyed learning more about Economics and participated in: Countdown to Retirement, Economic Newspaper Scavenger Hunt, Credit Ratings & VISA Football, The Price is Right, Economic Jeopardy, and Climbing the Savings Mountain.

We were pleased to welcome a special guest speaker, also a Glenburnie parent, who is an Economics Professor from the University of Waterloo.  We thoroughly enjoyed his informative presentation to the Grade 5-8 students which focused on the role of a market as it pertains to an economy, as well as an enjoyable stimulation activity.

The Economics Fair provided students in Senior Kindergarten to Grade 8 with a variety of hands-on, interactive, real-life lessons to enable them to develop an appreciation for the value of a dollar.  Students learned valuable lessons on how to differentiate between needs and wants, human resources, opportunity cost, scarcity, surplus, and budgeting.

At Glenburnie School, we value the importance of teaching financial literacy for tomorrow’s leaders.
