This past Thursday, crowds gathered as the MacLachlan College Grade 12 Physics students showcased their egg drop devices. After weeks of planning, testing and building, each design was carefully dropped off the back roof of the school onto the hard pavement four stories below. The objective was to create a protective structure that prevented a raw egg from breaking on impact. As this was a practical application of course content, students used their physics knowledge to design egg drop devices that adhered to certain restrictions including, no parachutes, and a weight limit and size limitation. Although some designs proved to be more successful than others, the event was quite a spectacle and the Physics class greatly enjoyed the assignment.
