MacLachlan College students in Grades 7 through 12 celebrated our annual WordFest by engaging in”difficult conversations,” the theme of this year’s InCITE writing competition. The focus of the difficult conversation shifted with each grade level. Grade 7s wrote conversations with those in a position of authority; Grade 8s with those who have been wronged; Grade 9s between friends; Grade 10s with parents. Grade 11s those that speak truth to power; Grade 12s was difficult conversations about religion and culture.

The overall winner in the Grade 7/8 band was Anudev with his riveting piece on the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. The Grade 9/10 winner was Caroline with her moving conversation between a boy and his parents about coming out as gay. In the Grade 11/12 band, Annelies took top spot with a carefully crafted piece written around a recent decision in Switzerland to forbid single-sex swim lessons to a Muslim family. All of these students will have their writing appear in the annual InCITE collection of student work featuring the best from across CIS member schools. Joining them with outstanding pieces of visual art are Jessica, GJ, Zachary, Charles, Matilda and Tabitha.
