Our Kindergarten classes recently journeyed to Toronto to visit the Ripley’s Aquarium as part of their “Under the Sea” and “My Five Senses” IB inquiry units. They participated in a workshop and explored the differences and similarities between how we use our senses and how a shark does. Did you know that a shark senses electricity using special sensors near it’s head?
Students learned more about the creatures at the aquarium by asking many inquiry questions and then identified different sea creatures using their senses. They identified an Arctic Cookie Starfish by finding a cookie smell, Peppermint Shrimp by testing for a minty smell and a Lemonpeel Angelfish by searching for … that’s right a lemon scent. Our young marine biologists then made shark paper bag puppets and enjoyed the rest of the visit exploring the many wonderful sights and sounds of the aquarium.
