On January 27, members of Appleby’s Health and Wellness Council participated in the Thinkfirst Injury Prevention Strategy for Youth (TIPSY) Program at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto. The TIPSY program educates students about the outcomes of poor choices and includes a tour of the trauma room in the Emergency Department and the Trauma/Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit. Students learned about risky behaviours that can lead to traumatic brain/spinal cord injury in youth, basic brain and spinal cord anatomy, consequences of injury and legal consequences of drinking/drugging and driving. They also heard personal life stories about losing family members to drunk driving, and the experiences of a trauma survivor who sustained a brain injury.
