For many years, MacLachlan College has participated in the highly regarded Forest of Reading, Canada’s largest recreational reading program run by the Ontario Library Association. Each year the program is highlighted by visits to the school by authors of some of the books read by our young readers over the course of the school year .
On Wednesday, Joanne Levy, author of the Red Maple Award nominated book “Small Medium at Large”, presented to all grade 6 to 8 students who are members of the Red Maple Club. Students in the club commit to reading from a selection of 10 Canadian fiction books chosen by the Ontario Library Association. If they read at least five of the ten books, they can then vote for their favourite. Those students who were voters by the time Joanne came to speak to us joined her in the Library for lunch.
Our special visitor on Thursday was David Carroll, author of the Silver Birch Award nominated book “Ultra”. David presented to students from grades 3 to 6 who were members of our Silver Birch Club. Again, students were required to read at least five books from their grade appropriate category which made them eligible to vote for their favourites. Voracious readers can have a vote in each of the 3 categories if they read enough books! Those students who were voters by the time David came to speak joined him in the Library for lunch.
A big thank you goes out to Mrs. Brezina for organizing the day and supporting literacy at the school by encouraging our students to become avid readers through the Red Maple and Silver Birch Programs.
